Why is STEM Education so Important?
The acronym STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. These concepts intertwine allowing our society to solve its problems based on the needs of individual communities. Science surrounds us and continual technological discoveries lead to easier lives. The engineering process helps to solve our problems while mathematics is used daily in all activities whether it is business or pleasure.
According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, STEM occupations are growing at a higher rate than other jobs. The future sustainability of our society rely on the development and implementation of these skills. Unfortunately, the mathematics and science scores of the average U.S. student fall way below those in other industrialized countries.
WMS STEM Squad gives middle school students the opportunity to investigate STEM-related concepts in non-traditional school settings. Ideas originating in the classroom can be expanded during these meetings by providing the members with a more hands-on approach to learning. Making math and science fun and interactive allow students to become more passionate about these concepts and spike interest in exploring possible employment in the STEM field. Getting our students excited about being our future innovators will benefit our society for generations to come.
