History of the Webster School District
The Moro School built in 1899 was the first school built in what is now the Webster School District. The District was allotted $100. The money was used to buy two chairs, one for the teacher and one for a visitor, a pail and dipper for water and a box heater. The land, timbers and labor were all donated in order to construct the school by area community members. The first school teacher at the school was Ethel Spafford. In 1911 the teacher’s salary was $38 per month. The district taxes were $350.87 and the District received $52.49 in State Aid. There were 53 books in the library valued at $16.16. Grades one through twelve were taught in the Webster Elementary School until the Webster High School building was constructed. In the fall of 1921, high school classes were conducted in the Webster Fair buildings until November 9, 1921 when teachers and students moved into the new High School building. There were four graduates in 1921 and in 1925 there were 22 graduates. At that time there were not school buses for transportation. Students who lived too far to walk to and from school rented rooms in private homes in Webster.
From the late 1800's until the mid 1900’s there were over 50 one room school houses in what is now the Webster School District.
Fast forward to present day. The Webster School District consists of an Elementary School which includes Early Childhood, 4 Year Old Kindergarten, 5 Year Old Kindergarten and grades 1 - 4, and a Middle/High School servicing grades 5 - 12. The district student enrollment is 635 and is staffed by 115 employees. The district covers roughly 550 square miles. On average 660 students are transported to and from school on one of nine bus routes. The buses travel about 995 miles per day which is slightly less than 180,000 miles per school year. The school library has a collection of over 20,000 books for students to utilize every day. Along with the changes in education through time, the district has adopted a 1:1 Chromebook Initiative with students Grades 2-12; allowing them to stay current in the digital technology age.
